Redwood and western red cedar for boards and rails, since both resist decay and insects far better than untreated pine. For posts, we usually suggest ground-contact pressure-treated lumber or galvanized steel set in concrete. In the heavy clay common on the valley floor, the post footing is what keeps a fence straight.

How do I keep a wood fence looking good in valley sun?
Long, dry summers bleach and dry out wood faster than mild coastal weather does. A UV-blocking stain or sealer slows graying and checking. Keep sprinkler heads aimed away from the boards, because daily wetting followed by hot sun is hard on wood, and keep soil and bark mulch off the bottom edge.
Is wood the best fit for my yard?
It depends on how you feel about upkeep. If you want a natural look and the most privacy per dollar, wood is a strong pick. If you would rather never stain, compare vinyl fences. If only a few posts are failing, fence repair may be enough.
