What fence suits an Eichler or mid-century home?
Sunnyvale has several neighborhoods of Eichler homes, known for flat roofs, glass walls and post-and-beam construction. Clean horizontal boards or vertical boards with a simple flat cap usually look right with them. Busy picket styles and ornate metal tend to clash. We can match the fence and side gate to the home's existing trim or siding color.
What other jobs are common in Sunnyvale?
- Replacing worn 6-foot fences between ranch-style homes on level lots.
- Adding a lattice or slat topper for extra privacy where the rules allow.
- Rebuilding side gates that have sagged from years of daily use.
- Fencing for townhome and condo communities, often with HOA approval.
Do I need to coordinate with my neighbors?
Usually. On Sunnyvale's compact lots, most back fences are shared. California law presumes shared costs for boundary fences and requires 30 days' written notice before the work, unless you already have a written agreement.
Whose rules apply?
The City of Sunnyvale's. It sets its own fence height and setback rules, separate from Santa Clara's. Some Eichler neighborhoods also have design guidelines. We check before we finalize anything.
What will it cost?
Horizontal designs use more labor and better boards than standard dog-ear fences, so they cost more per foot. See the cost guide for published ranges.
